Some
of the best events that took place during the recent Harlem Rebirth
have happened at the Cotton Club. I remember the fashion event held
inside of a big heated tent in the winter of 1997. Absolut Vodka
was the sponsor and I recall ice sculptures, Martini glass displays,
high end hourderves, and oh yes, lots of pretty women of ALL flavors.
I remember the diverse faces and the whole mood of the event. The
comfort level of all people in attendance was noteworthy. I remember
Leslie Wyche of 100 Black Men, an employee at the mayor's at the
time and a fixture on the Harlem social circuit saying, "this
is what Harlem will look like at ALL events in another ten years."
Just shy of two years, Leslie Wyche's words seem like past prophecy.
The Cotton Club is ideal for renting
out for private events. There was a point where the Cotton Club
hosted some of the hottest hip hop parties in town (Damon Dash and
Best-Out Crew, S&S, Kid Capri, Blue). The other end of the spectrum
hosted the original all you could eat Sunday Gospel Brunch. Those
in the know remember this as the best food display in town. New
Eve's were always a special event with New Years traditional food
such as black eyes peas, collard greens, ham, fried chicken, yams,
potato salad and corn bread. I have been to quite a few weddings
where the food and music could only be matched by the open bar at
the Cotton Club.
Recently,
the club has hosted a nostalgic swing dancing party during the week.
It is always a good idea to call during the mid-morning or afternoon
to get a schedule of the week's or month's festivities. Don't be
afraid to leave a message on the machine because my calls are usually
returned.
The
Cotton club has pulled of some of the best parties, social gatherings
and political events in town. Most of the events are open to the
public. Get involved in Harlem's community. Find out what is next
on the agenda at the World Famous Cotton Club. Give them a call!
