For many years, Harlem has been denied the presence of restaurant franchises that provide eat in wait service. With all of the commercial space in Harlem, and all of the economic development, it always made me wonder why the elite food franchises shied away from Harlem. We heard the rumors for years…Red Lobster was going to be where Jimmy’s Uptown was, now the Zip Code. Dallas BBQ’s was supposed to have a branch on 125th Street. I even heard smaller grapevine talk about a Pizza Hut, a Cinnnabon and a proposed Roscoe’s (Chicken and Waffles). The ice indeed may be broken with the inaugural inception of Harlem’s first 5 Star food franchise; IHOP!

After 2004, IHOP is celebrating its one year anniversary. I was one of the first guests to bless the IHOP dining room. The first annual quarter was crazy and IHOP was a work in progress. Long waits, poor service and sub par by comparison food to other IHOP chains had people wondering if this location would last. A full year later, the critics are silenced if not impressed by the progress. Make no mistake, the volume of this IHOP blows away the local IHOPS. The dining area is bigger, the kitchen is bigger and the staff is bigger…thus, the profits are bigger. I have no doubt that the Harlem IHOP is the top earning IHOP in New York. This is a result of changed more efficient management, better staff training and the personnel decision to hire from the community. Many of my old students are employed in various capacities and they have grown as individuals.

The food is typical IHOP. Great omelets, crispy hash browns, strong coffee, and of course hot pancakes with butter and the syrup carousel. Don’t be fooled either, the lunch menu of colossal burgers, melt sandwiches, and chicken tenders are all sure bets. The dinner menu of steak combinations, hearty chicken selections and monthly specials make IHOP a “not just breakfast” spot. You will be pleased with the service and the portions are phenomenal.

I advise you to get over to IHOP and see that it is happening in HARLEM! Maybe this will be the new beginning for other 5 Star franchises such as Cracker Barrel, Iron Skillet, Ruby Tuesday’s, TGI Friday’s, Applebee’s or even a Red Lobster. IHOP is proof that it can happen and it can work UPTOWN! Welcome aboard!
